The Mandibles by Lionel Shriver5/29/2023 Was there a specific trigger for this novel? Something that set you off? That’s a big subject and I don’t mind visiting it more than once. I’ve had a lifelong fascination with the relationship between mind and body, and the weirdness of living in an organism that’s in the process of corruption and, ultimately, death. Big Brother was about food and people’s relationship to it. Your novel Big Brother was about obesity. We feel like we’re in a disaster movie, only we’re on the wrong side of the screen and there’ll be no happy endings for our favourite characters. The possibility of catastrophe is stimulating to the imagination, though I worry this is potentially catastrophic on a scale that’s bigger than anything I could make up – and I don’t mean the disease itself, but everything that follows economically. What are these weeks of seclusion and anxiety going to do for art?Ĭataclysm is always good for the arts. But it’s two years’ work, and I’m publishing into a big, black hole all the bookshops closed. I’m ashamed of myself because I’m not supposed to care about what’s happening to my book it’s nothing compared to losing a business you’ve spent your whole life building. How do you feel about your new novel being published during this time?

Saga of the swamp thing 215/29/2023 Common spandex adventures are not to be found here, and this title is better without it. Characters such as Batman, John Constantine, Etrigan and The Spectre guest-star in the run, but they are not integral to it. While DC icons Batman and Superman share a common world, Swamp Thing is more or less set outside of that, while still existing within it. Moore took advantage of this freedom, placing no limits on the exploration of Swamp Thing's world.Īside from having a relatively fresh protagonist, Moore was also able to devise plots for the creature free from the continuity of the regular DCU. The creature was merely bound by the continuity of the previous 20 issues, leaving Moore free to do as he wished. Swamp Thing became Moore's own creative sandbox. The creature progresses thrughout the next 40 issues from not understanding what it is to becoming a dominant force of nature, able to transport itself across the globe, through space and even beyond the realm of the living. Our "hero" starts off as a monster, escaping from its captors and questioning its humanity. Swamp Thing's strength comes from the fact that it is like nothing else out there.

Story thieves series books5/29/2023 Bethany's father is a fictional character who has been missing for years. In Story Thieves, Owen learns that his friend, Bethany, is half-fictional. My first volume would be titled Jennifer White of Midwest City. I ran with the idea of actually being a book series since several years back, an eBay seller made note of my extremely common name and generic city name and how I sounded like the title character in a juvenile series. If you have read the updates on my Facebook page, you know that my page is currently set as being a "book series" after Facebook arbitrarily changed it to that. What a dream! Imagine being the star of your own book series! The first sentence of the summary reads, "Life is boring when you live in the real world instead of starring in your own book series." OMG. The first book in the Story Thieves series caught my eye, and I pulled it off the shelf. On January 13, I was in a bookstore, scanning the shelves to see if I could find another interesting modern series to try. I find it odd, annoying, and infuriating that the rest of Simon and Schuster's juvenile series output is higher quality than the current output of the Nancy Drew franchise. It should be noted that the Story Thieves series is published by Simon and Schuster. The Story Thieves series consists of the following books written by James Riley.

Hard Wood by Lauren Blakely5/28/2023 I don’t believe in writer's block, which I know might sound kind of silly, but I really don't, and it's partly because before I wrote romance novels full-time I was a journalist. But I try to be as structured and disciplined as possible, because otherwise it's spilling over the entire day and you're writing at two in the morning and that's probably not the best time. And then in the afternoon I try to focus on business stuff. After I come home from walking my four dogs, I try to settle in and usually try to write 2,500 or 3,000 words before or right after lunch time. I try to get as much writing as I can possibly do in the mornings, because it's so easy to get sucked into other things like Facebook or managing the business side. On how she manages to write eight books a year Here, she shares her tips for aspiring writers, romance or otherwise, and explains how a good sex scene makes a reader sweat. In 2018 alone - which, reminder, is not even half over yet - she's released five books and has at least five more coming.

In Defense of Housing by David Madden5/28/2023 Nearly all of the nation’s more than 3,000 public housing authorities have waiting lists. Madden argues that affordable housing is more important now than ever: “If you ever work full time for the minimum wage in America, the number of states where you can afford to rent a one-bedroom apartment on the private market is exactly zero.”įrom the nearly universally negative coverage of public housing, you’d never know that far more people are trying to get into it than leave it. Madden points out that ever since public housing was created, there have been attempts to delegitimize it-but that should not lead us to view public housing as an outright policy failure. The show depicts the clashes over federally mandated public housing developments in Yonkers, NY during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Madden's opinion piece in the Post comes as David Simon’s HBO miniseries "Show Me a Hero" brings the legacy and future of public housing development to the fore. David Madden, co-author of the forthcoming housing justice book In Defense of Housing: The Politics of Crisis, recently demystified popular conceptions of public housing in The Washington Post.
